Dick Turpin series about notorious 18th century highwayman announced
Noel Fielding is starring in a new TV series about Dick Turpin!
The 48-year-old English comedian is best known for hosting The Great British Bake Off (or The Great British Baking Show as it’s called in the US).
He’s also previously appeared as an actor in British comedy shows like The Mighty Boosh and The IT Crowd.
Apple announced the commission of their currently untitled Dick Turpin project this week, describing it as a “comedy-adventure” series.
In what seems like such a perfect piece of casting it’s hard to believe nobody ever thought of it before, Fielding will lead the cast as legendary highwayman Dick Turpin.
Dick Turpin – born Richard Turpin in 1705 – was an English highwayman whose criminal adventures became the stuff of legend (and a significant amount of absolute fiction) after he was executed in York at the age of 33 for stealing a horse in 1739.
The official synopsis reads: “In this irreverent retelling, Dick is the most famous, but least likely of highway robbers, whose success is defined mostly by his charm, showmanship and great hair.
“Together with his gang of loveable rogues, Dick rides the highs and lows of celebrity — and does what he can to escape the clutches of the Thief Taker General.”
The show is written and created by Claire Downes, Stuart Lane and Ian Jarvis, with Noel Fielding and Jeremy Dyson (The League Of Gentlemen) as script consultants, and Ben Palmer (The Inbetweeners Movie) directing.
The Dick Turpin series will premiere exclusively on Apple TV+ later this year.
