Dame Maggie Smith won three Emmys, her first non-ensemble Screen Actors Guild Award, and her third Golden Globe award for the role.

And we’re pretty sure this was mostly down to her perfect comic timing when it came to delivering Violet’s caustic insults, dubious advice and witty asides!
