‘Downton’ writer: Movie is ‘a bit of a rest from the whirlpool’ of 2019 news
The creator of Downton Abbey has promised “comfort and reassurance” from the movie.
Based on ITV’s hit period drama series, the long-awaited film will see almost the entire cast reunite when it arrives in cinemas later this month.
Speaking to Harper’s Bazaar, writer Julian Fellowes admitted: “There is a very, very high level of expectation to meet, manage, and satisfy.”
Fellowes, who wrote all 52 episodes of the TV show, said that the movie will offer viewers a bit of escapism from the real-world events of the past few years.
He explained: “There is a certain dependability about Downton. In a world that is lacking in certainty, I hope that, for the price of a cinema ticket, viewers will get two hours of comfort and reassurance in return. A bit of a rest from the whirlpool.
“If we have managed that—and I dare to hope that we have—then I think we will all feel that we have succeeded.”
Fellowes also revealed that fans will get everything they’ve been hoping for: “I think of the movie as ‘Downton Plus’ – bigger, better, brighter.”
The Downton Abbey movie will be released in the UK on Friday 13th September and in the US on Friday 20th September.
