Elton John biopic ‘Rocketman’ reveals who’ll be playing the singer in new movie

The first piece of casting has been confirmed for a new movie about the life of Elton John.

Directed by Dexter Fletcher and written by Lee Hall, Rocketman begins shooting soon.

Taboo star Tom Hardy was previously tipped to play Elton John in the movie, but it’s now been announced that Kingsman star Taron Egerton will play the singer.

The 28-year-old British actor will be seen on screen later this year in the new Robin Hood movie.

Kingsman director Matthew Vaughn will produce the movie. Elton John played himself in Vaughn’s Kingsman: The Golden Circle last year.

Set in the late 1960s and early 1970s, Rocketman will follow “John’s emergence as a prodigy at the Royal Academy of Music to becoming a music superstar and his partnership with songwriting collaborator Bernie Taupin,” Variety reports.

Dexter Fletcher recently took over from disgraced director Bryan Singer to complete filming on the upcoming Freddie Mercury biopic Bohemian Rhapsody.
