‘Ghosts’ future revealed: Is Season 5 happening?
The BBC has announced if there will be another season of Ghosts.
From the creators and stars of Horrible Histories, the hit comedy series follows a cash-strapped young couple who inherit a rickety country mansion, only to find it teeming with needy ghosts from various different points in history.
Ghosts launched in April 2019, and returned this autumn.
The fourth season continued the show’s huge success, officially becoming the UK’s biggest comedy series of the year (so far) on broadcast TV.

Ahead of the third Christmas special later this month, the BBC has confirmed that Ghosts has been renewed for another season!
Six brand new episodes will begin filming in England in early 2023.
When’s the release date?
The past three seasons have all premiered in either August or September, so we’d expect Season 5 to air around the same time in late summer or early autumn 2023.
The BBC’s Director of Comedy, Jon Petrie commented: “We are thrilled to announce a fifth series of this modern British Comedy masterpiece.
“Ghosts continues to go from strength to strength and the BBC couldn’t be more grateful for the amount of laughter and love that the creators pour into this unique show.”
Executive producer Alison Carpenter added: “We can’t wait to return to Button House with our absurdly talented writers, cast and crew.
“It is a privilege to make Ghosts, and wonderful to receive such an enthusiastic response from the audience. We hope they will enjoy what we have in store in the fifth series.”
Will all the cast be back?
Ghosts writers and creators Mathew Baynton, Simon Farnaby, Martha Howe-Douglas, Jim Howick, Laurence Rickard and Ben Willbond are all expected to return, alongside Lolly Adefope as Kitty, and Charlotte Ritchie and Kiell Smith-Bynoe as Alison and Mike.
The cast have issued this joint statement: “We are delighted to confirm that Ghosts will be returning to BBC One and BBC iPlayer for a fifth series in 2023.
“We’ve had much fun in the writers room and are hugely excited by the new stories we have to tell and further secrets we get to reveal. We’ve been getting back into practice walking through walls and can’t wait to start shooting again in the new year.”
What will happen in Season 5?
We’re told that Alison and Mike will start looking into other means of making ends meet, following the destruction of their B&B (and main income) in the gatehouse fire.
The couple will be contemplating a new chapter that could have a huge effect on the Ghosts’ (after) lives.
This year’s festive Ghosts episode airs at 7.25pm on BBC One on Christmas Day, and will then be streaming on BBC iPlayer.

The official synopsis for the Christmas special reads: “The Ghosts, touched by Alison’s thoughtful generosity, are inspired to give her a special Christmas present in return – but with Alison due back in a matter of hours, can they pull off their ambitious plan in time?
“Mike’s loaded Tupperware comes in handy when their journey hits a bump in the road, forcing them to reassess their Christmas day plans. And Kitty gets her moment in the spotlight thanks to a much-needed pep talk from a surprising source.”
Charlotte Ritchie will also be back on our screens in the new season of Grantchester next spring!
