‘Great Expectations’ first look: Olivia Colman is Miss Havisham in new BBC series

The first photos have been revealed for the BBC’s upcoming Great Expectations mini-series.

Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight is adapting Charles Dickens’ thirteenth novel, which was originally published in 1861.

His new six-part version of Great Expectations was first announced by the BBC and FX two years ago.

From the same creative team as 2019’s A Christmas Carol adaptation and Taboo, the show is currently filming in the South of England.

Steven Knight is once again writing and executive producing the limited series, alongside producers Ridley Scott (Gladiator) and Tom Hardy (Taboo).

Leading the cast is The Crown actress Olivia Colman.

The Oscar-winning The Favourite star is playing the iconic character of Miss Havisham.

She’ll be joined by Fionn Whitehead, best known for his roles in Dunkirk and Black Mirror, as Pip – we’ve got a first look at the two of them here:

Whitehead can also be seen in the brilliant new movie The Duke, alongside Helen Mirren and Jim Broadbent, and upcoming Emily Bronte biopic Emily.

The supporting cast of Great Expectations includes Ashley Thomas (The Ipcress File), Johnny Harris (Medici), Shalom Brune-Franklin (The Tourist), Hayley Squires (Call the Midwife), Owen McDonnell (Killing Eve), Trystan Gravelle (Quiz), and Matt Berry (What We Do in the Shadows).

We’ve got another photo of Olivia Colman as Miss Havisham, this time with Shalom Brune-Franklin as her adopted daughter Estella:

Charlotte Moore, Director of BBC Content, previously commented: “Great Expectations is the second in Steven Knight’s series of Dickens adaptations and the perfect choice given its timely and personal narrative.”

She added: “His original take on one of Britain’s most loved classics will make it must see drama for a whole new generation.”

Steven Knight’s previous Chares Dickens adaptation, A Christmas Carol, was watched by nearly 8 million viewers when it aired a few years ago, attracting mostly positive reviews.

Great Expectations is expected to premiere this Christmas on FX in the US and on BBC One in the UK.

The final season of Peaky Blinders finally arrived in the UK earlier this year and dropped on Netflix internationally last month.

Steven Knight’s A Christmas Carol is available to watch on Amazon Prime.
