‘House of the Dragon’ trailer: ‘Game of Thrones’ prequel reveals new footage

HBO has released a brand new trailer for House of the Dragon!

Based on George R. R. Martin’s book Fire & Blood, the upcoming Game of Thrones spin-off is set 200 years before the events of HBO’s previous hit series.

HBO’s fantasy drama launched in 2011 and ran for eight seasons, coming to a controversial end in 2019.

House of the Dragon is co-created by George R. R. Martin and Ryan Condal (Colony, Hercules).

It’ll tell the story of House Targaryen – the House that gave us the Mother of Dragons herself, Daenerys Targaryen – exploring the events leading to the ‘Dance of the Dragons’ civil war.

Leading the cast are Paddy Considine (Peaky Blinders) as King Viserys, Rhys Ifans (Notting Hill) as Ser Otto Hightower, and Olivia Cooke (Vanity Fair) as his daughter Lady Alicent.

They’re joined by Matt Smith (The Crown) as Prince Daemon Targaryen, Steve Toussaint (It’s a Sin) as Lord Corlys Velaryon, Eve Best (The King’s Speech) as Princess Rhaenys Velaryon, Sonoya Mizuno (La La Land) as Mysaria, Fabien Frankel (The Serpent) as Ser Criston Cole, and Emma D’Arcy (Wanderlust) as Princess Rhaenrya.

Following a brief teaser last October, HBO’s latest 90-second preview gives us the best look yet at what to expect from House of the Dragon.

The question “What is this brief mortal life if not the pursuit of legacy?” opens the trailer, and it all gets suitably dark and epic from thereon in:

We’ve also got a new tagline for the show: “History does not remember blood. It remembers names.”

HBO announced earlier this year that House of the Dragon will premiere in the US on HBO and HBO Max on Sundays from 21st August.

The ten-part first season will be broadcast simultaneously in the UK on Sky Atlantic and NOW TV very late each Sunday night, with a repeat airing at a more respectable hour on the Monday evening.

The official synopsis for the show reads: “The prequel series finds the Targaryen dynasty at the absolute apex of its power, with more than 15 dragons under their yoke.

“Most empires-real and imagined-crumble from such heights. In the case of the Targaryens, their slow fall begins almost 193 years before the events of Game of Thrones, when King Viserys Targaryen breaks with a century of tradition by naming his daughter Rhaenyra heir to the Iron Throne.

“But when Viserys later fathers a son, the court is shocked when Rhaenyra retains her status as his heir, and seeds of division sow friction across the realm.”
