‘Mr Malcolm’s List’ trailer: ‘Sanditon’ star returns in romantic period drama

Theo James’ latest movie is in cinemas now!

Set in Regency London in 1818, Mr Malcolm’s List is based on the novel by Suzanne Allain.

The new period drama boasts a brilliant cast, including Theo James (Sanditon), Freida Pinto (Slumdog Millionaire), Sope Dirisu (The Halcyon), Zawe Ashton (The Handmaid’s Tale), and Oliver Jackson-Cohen (The Haunting of Bly Manor).

Released in US cinemas earlier this month, the film has received some great reviews, with The Hollywood Reporter calling it “a witty tale of 19th-century London’s competitive marriage market.”

Variety wrote: “It’s a Regency romance set in London in 1818, where someone in the film is being fooled at every moment. The deceptions and symmetries are standard, but this is the kind of movie that rises or falls on whether the actors can carry the duplicity — and the innocence — aloft. And the actors here are marvelous: tart, stylish, emotionally vibrant, never more knowing than when they’re being duped.”

The official synopsis reads: “In 19th-century England, jilted by London’s most eligible bachelor, Julia convinces her friend to play the role of his ideal match. Soon, Mr. Malcolm wonders whether he’s found the perfect woman or the perfect hoax.

“When she fails to meet an item on his list of requirements for a bride, Julia Thistlewaite (Zawe Ashton) is jilted by London’s most eligible bachelor, Mr. Malcolm (Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísù).

“Feeling humiliated and determined to exact revenge, she convinces her friend Selina Dalton (Freida Pinto) to play the role of his ideal match. Soon, Mr. Malcolm wonders whether he’s found the perfect woman…or the perfect hoax.”

A release date in the UK for Mr Malcolm’s List hasn’t yet been announced, but we’ll let you know as soon as it’s confirmed.

While Theo James didn’t reprise his role as Sidney in the second season of Sanditon, the Downton Abbey actor was back on our TV screens recently in HBO’s new adaptation of The Time Traveller’s Wife.

Written by Sherlock creator Steven Moffat, the mini-series is now streaming on HBO Max.
