‘Sherlock’ writer’s ‘Time Traveler’s Wife’ adaptation reveals premiere date

It’s been announced when the new version of The Time Traveler’s Wife will begin.

Based on Audrey Niffenegger’s best-selling 2003 novel of the same name, the upcoming TV drama stars two familiar faces from Downton Abbey.

The Time Traveler’s Wife was previously turned into a movie back in 2009, featuring Eric Bana and Rachel McAdams.

HBO’s brand new mini-series has been adapted from Niffenegger’s book by Sherlock co-creator Steven Moffat.

The Scottish screenwriter is best known for his work on Doctor Who, Sherlock, Coupling, Jekyll, and Dracula.

The Time Traveler’s Wife tells the story of “a couple whose marriage is complicated by one thing… time travel.”

Playing time traveler Henry DeTamble in the six-part series is Sanditon actor Theo James.

He’s joined by Scottish actress Rose Leslie, who you may have seen in Game of ThronesVigil, and The Good Fight.

Downton Abbey fans will recognise the pair as housemaid Gwen Dawson, and the ill-fated Mr Pamuk.

We can now officially confirm that The Time Traveler’s Wife will premiere in the US on HBO on Sunday 15th May, streaming on and HBO Max.

In the UK, the show debuts just one day later on Monday 16th May on Sky Atlantic, streaming on Now.

Episodes will air weekly.

Coinciding with the release date announcement, HBO has also given us a closer look at the series with this new two-minute trailer:

Discussing his love for time travel stories, former Doctor Who writer Steven Moffat explained to Entertainment Weekly: “Non-linear narrative appeals to me massively. I’ve always written nonlinear, and when people have taken me to task for always writing things in the wrong order, I always say, ‘What’s the right order? Is your memory in sequence?'”

He added: “The story of our lives in our head is in a jumble of the wrong order, so what is the right order to tell a story? And if the story of your own life is non-sequential, who are you to dictate that any other story should be in what is notionally and incorrectly called the right order?”

Sanditon returned for a second season last month, although Theo James sadly wasn’t able to reprise his role as Sidney Parker.

Downton Abbey: The Complete Collection box set is available on DVD on Amazon.
