Watch epic first trailer for ‘Gladiator’ director’s new ‘Napoleon’ movie
The first trailer has been unveiled for upcoming historical drama Napoleon!
From Gladiator director Ridley Scott, the movie is described as “a spectacle-filled action epic.”
It’ll dramatise the checkered rise and fall of the iconic French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte, played by Oscar-winner Joaquin Phoenix.
“He came from nothing. He conquered everything,” states the tagline.

Napoleon boasts a great cast alongside Walk the Line actor Joaquin Phoenix, who previously worked with Ridley Scott in Gladiator playing Commodus.
The American star is joined by Vanessa Kirby – best known as Princess Margaret in The Crown – in the role of Empress Joséphine.
(This part was originally set to be played by Killing Eve actress Jodie Comer when the movie was first announced back in June 2021.)
You’ll recognise Mark Bonnar from Guilt too as Napoleon’s general, Jean-Andoche Junot, The Serpent actor Tahar Rahim as Paul Barras, and Ben Miles – The Crown‘s Peter Townsend – as Caulaincourt, diplomat and close advisor to Napoleon.
The cast also includes Ludivine Sagnier (Peter Pan) as socialite Theresa Cabarrus, Matthew Needham (House of the Dragon) as Napoleon’s brother Lucien Bonaparte, Youssef Kerkour (Home) as commander Marshal Davout, Phil Cornwell (Dead Ringers) as Sanson ‘The Bourreau’, Édouard Philipponnat (House of Gucci) as Tsar Alexander, Paul Rhys (Victoria) as leading diplomat Talleyrand, John Hollingworth (The Queen’s Gambit) as Marshal Ney, and Gavin Spokes (The Ipcress File) as Moulins.
The official synopsis reads: “Against a stunning backdrop of large-scale filmmaking orchestrated by legendary director Ridley Scott, the film captures Bonaparte’s relentless journey to power through the prism of his addictive, volatile relationship with his one true love, Josephine, showcasing his visionary military and political tactics against some of the most dynamic practical battle sequences ever filmed.”
When’s the release date?
Napoleon arrives exclusively in cinemas on Wednesday 22 November.
It’ll eventually be streaming on Apple TV+ in 2024.
YouTube viewers seem to be loving the trailer so far, praising the “great visuals” and saying it “gave me goosebumps.”
However, many users shared the same gripe…
“This looks great, but why does everyone have an English accent when they’re portraying the French?” says one comment.
“The English accents are throwing me off. They couldn’t find any French speaking actors/actresses?” wrote another.
Despite reaching his 86th birthday this year, director Ridley Scott certainly shows no signs of slowing down!
The English filmmaker is currently busy shooting the long-awaited sequel to Gladiator ahead of its release next year.
Gladiator is available to watch on Amazon Prime Video.
