New period dramas on Netflix in the US: What’s added in July 2021?
Another month, another selection of new movies and TV series to watch on Netflix in the US!
The complete list of additions for July 2021 is as massive as ever, so here we’ve picked out the best titles for fans of period dramas and British TV to add to their watch list.
Memoirs of a Geisha (available from 1st July 2021)
Based on Arthur Golden’s novel, this epic drama film was produced by Steven Spielberg and released in 2005. Memoirs of a Geisha follows a young Japanese girl who is sold by her poor family to a geisha house in the 1920s to support them by training as a geisha.
Hampstead (available from 1st July 2021)
This British romantic comedy from 2017 stars Diane Keaton as an American widow and Brendan Gleeson and a gruff Irish loner, who both live in the idyllic London neighborhood of Hampstead, leading to an unexpected romance. The cast also includes James Norton (Grantchester), Lesley Manville (World on Fire), and Jason Watkins (McDonald & Dodds).
Ophelia (available from 1st July 2021)
Daisy Ridley (Star Wars), Naomi Watts (King Kong), Clive Owen (Croupier), George MacKay (1917), Tom Felton (Harry Potter) star in this romantic drama from 2018 which tells the story of William Shakespeare’s Hamlet from Ophelia’s perspective.
The Beguiled (available from 1st July 2021)
Based on the 1966 novel by Thomas P. Cullinan, Sofia Coppola’s Gothic drama is set in a girls school in Virginia during the American Civil War. Nicole Kidman, Kirsten Dunst, Colin Farrell, and Elle Fanning lead the cast.
The Cook of Castamar – Season 1 (available from 9th July 2021)
Set in Madrid in the early 18th-century, this Spanish period drama series is based on Fernando J. Muñez’s novel. The Cook of Castamar premiered in Spain earlier this year and tells the love story of an agoraphobic cook and a widowed nobleman.
