Will there be a second season of ‘Penny Dreadful: City of Angels’?
Showtime has announced the fate of Penny Dreadful: City of Angels.
A follow-up to Penny Dreadful, which aired between 2014 and 2016, the period drama horror spin-off premiered in the US in April and aired in the UK this summer.
City of Angels was set in America in the late 1930s, rather than the original’s Victorian London setting, and introduced a brand new set of characters.
Sadly, it’s now been confirmed that the show has been cancelled after just one season.
The official statement says: “Showtime has decided not to move forward with another season of Penny Dreadful: City of Angels. We would like to thank executive producers John Logan, Michael Aguilar and the entire cast and crew for their outstanding work on this project.”
The official synopsis read: “City of Angels is set in 1938 Los Angeles, a time and place deeply infused with Mexican-American folklore and social tension.
“Rooted in the conflict between characters connected to the deity Santa Muerte and others allied with the Devil, Penny Dreadful: City of Angels will explore an exciting mix of the supernatural and the combustible reality of that period, creating new occult myths and moral dilemmas within a genuine historical backdrop.”
The cast included Natalie Dormer (Game of Thrones), Nathan Lane (Modern Family), Brent Spiner (Star Trek: The Next Generation), and Rory Kinnear (Skyfall).
