‘Penny Dreadful’ might be returning with a new spin-off
It looks like Penny Dreadful could be coming back from the dead!
The British-American horror period drama series launched in May 2014 and ran for three seasons.
Starring James Bond star Timothy Dalton with Eva Green (Casino Royale), Rory Kinnear (Black Mirror), Billie Piper (Doctor Who), Josh Hartnett (Pearl Harbor) and Helen McCrory (Harry Potter), it aired on Showtime in the USA and on Sky in the UK.
It’s now being reported by CultBox that Showtime is looking to return to the world of Penny Dreadful.
Apparently “it’s early days but the network is racing ahead in developing a spin-off to Penny Dreadful that will be set in and around Los Angeles.”
We’re told that “they’re casting now for lots of new roles and that, just like before, some of them are established characters from genre fiction.”
The show concluded in June 2016, with no warning in advance that it would be the final episode, although Season 3 was always planned to wrap up the story.
Creator John Logan explained at the time: “That’s what the ending of this series is, it is meant to be a strong, bold, theatrical ending because I think that’s what our fans like and to water that down with an announcement or having them know I think would be an act of bad faith.”
Penny Dreadful was set in Victorian London and featured many characters from 19th-century Gothic fiction, including Dorian Gray from Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray, Van Helsing and Count Dracula from Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Victor Frankenstein and his monster from Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, and Dr. Henry Jekyll from Robert Louis Stevenson’s Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde.
Penny Dreadful is available on DVD on Amazon here.
Eva Green begins filming the BBC’s adaptation of The Luminaries next month, based on Eleanor Catton’s novel set in New Zealand during the 1860s gold rush.
