‘Ripley’ trailer: Andrew Scott stars in Netflix’s ‘Talented Mr. Ripley’ series

Netflix has unveiled the first trailer for Ripley!

Originally announced way back in 2019, the upcoming 1960s-set mini-series will adapt the first of Patricia Highsmith‘s five novels featuring the character of Tom Ripley.

The part was previously played by Matt Damon in the highly successful 1999 movie, which also starred Jude Law and Gwyneth Paltrow.

This time around, Sherlock actor Andrew Scott takes the lead, fresh from the huge acclaim he’s getting for his role in All of Us Strangers.

Written and directed by Schindler’s List screenwriter Stephen Zallian, Netflix’s eight-part adaptation introduces its title character as a grifter scraping by in early ’60s New York.

There he’s hired by a wealthy industrialist to travel to Italy to try to convince the man’s dilettante son, Dickie Greenleaf, to return home. Accepting the job is Tom’s first step into a complex life of deceit, fraud, and murder.

If the show is a hit, Zallian hopes to adapt all five of Highsmith’s Tom Ripley novels.

Joining Andrew Scott are Johnny Flynn (Emma) as wealthy loafer Dickie Greenleaf and Dakota Fanning (The Equalizer) as Dickie’s girlfriend, Marge Sherwood , who suspects darker motives underlie Tom’s affability.

John Malkovich (The ABC Murders), Italian actress Margherita Buy, and English singer Eliot Sumner are also amongst the cast.

When’s the release date?

All eight episodes of Ripley will premiere exclusively on Netflix globally on Thursday 4 April 2024.

“I’m already SO IN LOVE with the cinematography!” wrote one excited YouTube user. “And even though I’m not a big fan, I think the idea to release this series in B&W is a stroke of genius! Andrew’s gonna be AMAZING in it!”

“Tom Ripley is a character that requires so much nuance and Andrew Scott definitely has the acting chops for it,” commented another.

It’s not just Andrew Scott that viewers are excited about seeing in this…

“I’ll watch anything with Johnny Flynn in it (even if it’s just for ONE SECOND),” said a fan of the English actor and musician.

Flynn can currently be seen in cinemas in the brilliant new period drama movie One Life, alongside Sir Anthony Hopkins and Helena Bonham Carter.
