‘The Buccaneers’ reveals if it’s getting a second season

Apple TV+ has made an announcement about the future of The Buccaneers!

The new period drama series is inspired by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Edith Wharton’s unfinished final novel of the same name.

Launching in November to largely positive reviews, The Buccaneers was praised as “not a subtle show but it has been precision-tooled to hit all the beats that fans of romantic period dramas expect of the genre.”

Variety summed the series up saying “if Bridgerton and The Gilded Age melded together, their grittier, splashier baby would be The Buccaneers.”

Since The Buccaneers debuted last autumn, we’ve been waiting to hear if it would be returning for more episodes.

We can now confirm that Apple TV+ has officially renewed the show for a second season!

Wharton’s novel was adapted by British comedian and writer Katherine Jakeways (Sherlock, Miranda), with Bleak House director Susanna White helming the first season.

“It’s been a complete thrill to watch people all over the world fall in love with these characters, who’ve been brought to such vibrant life by our spectacular cast,”  commented Jakeways.

“We know Season 1 left audiences desperate to know what’s next for our buccaneers, so I’m absolutely delighted to have the opportunity to explore the further adventures of this smart, joyful, messy sisterhood.”

“The irreverence and wit of The Buccaneers charmed global audiences and we’re excited to be working with Katherine Jakeways and The Forge again on the next adventure for Nan and her friends,” said Jay Hunt, creative director for Apple TV+ in Europe.

The cast includes Kristine Frøseth as Nan St. George, Alisha Boe (13 Reasons Why) as Conchita Closson, Josie Totah as Mabel Elmsworth, Aubri Ibrag as Lizzy Elmsworth, Imogen Waterhouse (The Irregulars) as Jinny St. George, and Mia Threapleton (Dangerous Liaisons) as Honoria Marable, with Christina Hendricks from Mad Men playing Mrs. St. George.

All the main cast are expected to return in Season 2.

There are no firm details yet on a release date for the new season of The Buccaneers.

Season 1 began filming in March 2022 and premiered in November 2023, so even if production resumes this spring, we don’t expect Season 2 to arrive on Apple TV+ until autumn 2025 at the earliest.

While fans wait for the show to return, we do recommend going back and watching the BBC’s classic 1995 adaptation of The Buccaneers if you’ve never seen it!

Edith Wharton’s novel is available on Amazon.
