A very different adaptation of one of Britain’s most famous legends has just arrived in cinemas.
The Death of Robin Hood, starring Hugh Jackman and Jodie Comer, is released in UK cinemas on 4 September 2026.
The film was directed and written by Michael Sarnoski (Pig, A Quiet Place: Day One) and offers a much darker interpretation of Robin Hood than audiences may be used to.
What is The Death of Robin Hood about?
Hugh Jackman stars as an ageing and battle-worn Robin Hood who is forced to reckon with the consequences of his violent past.
After being injured in what he believes will be his final battle, Robin Hood is given shelter in a priory, where a mysterious woman offers him a chance at salvation.
This film explores what might have happened to the legendary outlaw towards the end of his life instead of focusing on the adventures of his youth.

The film was shot partly in Northern Ireland, with its rugged landscapes helping to create the story’s bleak medieval world.
Is The Death of Robin Hood a traditional Robin Hood movie?
Definitely not.
The film gives us a darker and more violent reimagining of the legend, with an older Robin looking back on a life that was dominated by crime and bloodshed.
UK viewers should also be aware that the BBFC has given the film a 15 certificate for “strong bloody violence, injury detail”.
