‘The Twits’ first look: Netflix reveals next Roald Dahl adaptation
Netflix has revealed more details about its version of The Twits.
Based on Roald Dahl‘s classic story for children, a new animated feature is being written, directed and produced by Phil Johnston.
The Oscar-nominated filmmaker is best known for his work on the hit movies Wreck It Ralph, Zootopia, and Ralph Breaks the Internet.
“I’ve always been attracted to reprehensible characters,” joked Johnston. “I don’t know what this says about me, and I really don’t want to look into it.”
Explaining why the book was his favourite growing up, he explained: “I love the Twits and their terrible tricks. I love that they lack self-awareness and personal hygiene and any inkling of human decency.
“And I love this movie because it reminds us that twits like the Twits, whose default emotions are anger and vengeance, can’t be allowed to win in our world.”
Here’s a sneak peek at the movie:
“Buckle up for a thrilling adventure because we’re heading to Twitlandia,” Netflix announced today, promising a “hysterically funny, wild ride of a film.”
Netflix’s movie will be the first ever screen adaptation of The Twits, which has sold over 16 million copies worldwide since it was published in 1980.
The Twits will be made by Jellyfish Pictures, the British VFX and Animation company behind The Bad Guys, Trolls World Tour, and The Boss Baby: Family Business.
They’ve also done visual effects for How to Train Your Dragon: Homecoming, Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical, and several Star Wars movies.
The official synopsis says: “Mr. and Mrs. Twit are the meanest, smelliest, nastiest people in the world who also happen to own and operate the most disgusting, most dangerous, most idiotic amusement park in the world, Twitlandia.
“But when the Twits rise to power in their town, two brave orphans and a family of magical animals are forced to become as tricky as the Twits in order to save the city.”
When’s the release date?
The first animated release in Netflix’s upcoming lineup of Roald Dahl projects, The Twits will premiere on Netflix in 2025.
It follows Wes Anderson’s short film based on Dahl’s The Wonderful World of Henry Sugar, which debuts later this month, and a new animated version of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
Roald Dahl’s The Twits book is available on Amazon.
