Netflix has revealed the first details about its upcoming Vikings spin-off series.
Inspired by the sagas of Viking Ragnar Lothbrok, Vikings launched in 2013.
The historical drama series comes to an end later this year with the second half of its sixth season.
It’s not the end for the Vikings franchise, however, as Netflix is producing a follow-up!
Set a hundred years after the original show, Vikings: Valhalla will follow “the most famous Vikings known to history.”
Famous historical figures in the brand new series are set to include the Norman king William the Conqueror, Leif Erikson, Harald Harada and Freydis.
Vikings creator Michael Hirst is returning as an executive producer on the new show, alongside Vikings producer Morgan O’Sullivan.
Hirst commented: “I am beyond excited that we are announcing the continuation of our Vikings saga. I know that the millions of our fans across the globe will be thrilled by the belief being shown in our show by MGM and Netflix.”
Confirming the hiring of Jeb Stuart as showrunner on Vikings: Valhalla, he added: “Jeb Stuart, a truly wonderful writer, will bring new story-lines and a powerful visceral vision to stories about some of the most famous Vikings known to history.”
Steve Stark, MGM’s President of Television Production and Development said: “We are thrilled to be partnering with Michael, Morgan, Jeb and Netflix on the next chapter in the incredible Vikings universe.
“Valhalla has been a labor of love for everyone involved and as we look ahead to the continuation of this great saga, we are excited to know that fans the world over will have the opportunity to continue with the series on its new home at Netflix.”
Netflix Originals exec Channing Dungey also commented: “Vikings: Valhalla promises to be everything that fans love about the franchise: heart-pounding, unstoppable action rooted in rich characters and dramatic storytelling that shines the light on family, loyalty and power.”
Vikings: Valhalla will premiere exclusively on Netflix in 2021.
Vikings is available on DVD on Amazon.
