Daisy Ridley’s new film Young Woman and the Sea is now available to stream on Disney+.
The biographical drama tells the story of Trudy Eberle, who in 1926 became the first woman to swim across the English Channel. It is based on the book “Young Woman and the Sea: How Trudy Ederle Conquered the English Channel and Inspired the World” by American author Glenn Stout.

Trudy Eberle was the daughter of a German emigrant from New York who was a gold medallist at the Olympic Games in 1924. Two years later, Trudy decided to take on a major challenge and swim across the English Channel, a challenge that at that point had never been completed by a woman.
The official synopsis reads:
“Through the steadfast support of her older sister and supportive trainers, she overcame adversity and the animosity of a patriarchal society to rise through the ranks of the Olympic swimming team and complete the staggering achievement: a 21-mile trek from France to England.”
