‘The Secret Garden’ trailer: Colin Firth stars in ‘Harry Potter’ producer’s new movie

The first trailer for the new adaptation of The Secret Garden has been unveiled.

Starring Colin Firth (Pride & Prejudice) and Julie Walters (Mamma Mia), the new family movie is based on Frances Hodgson Burnett’s classic 1910 novel.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child writer Jack Thorne and David Heyman, the producer of Paddington and the Harry Potter movies, have updated the story from the Edwardian era to 1947, setting the movie shortly after World War 2, at the time of Partition in India.

Director Marc Munden previously commented: “It’s an opportunity to immerse ourselves in an uncanny and wondrous world, which will play to the imaginations of adults and children alike.”

The official synopsis reads: “The Secret Garden tells the story of Mary Lennox (Dixie Egerickx), a prickly and unloved 10-year-old girl, born in India to wealthy British parents. When they suddenly die, she is sent back to England to live with her uncle, Archibald Craven (Colin Firth) on his remote country estate deep in the Yorkshire moors.

“There, she begins to uncover many family secrets, particularly after meeting her sickly cousin Colin (Edan Hayhurst), who has been shut away in a wing of the house. Together, these two damaged, slightly misfit children heal each other through their discovery of a wondrous secret garden, lost in the grounds of Misselthwaite Manor. A magical place of adventure that will change their lives forever.”

The Secret Garden will be released in cinemas on 17th April 2020.
