Watch first trailer for Amy Winehouse biopic ‘Back To Black’

We’ve got our first look at the upcoming movie about the late Amy Winehouse!

One of 2024’s most anticipated movies, Back to Black will explore the troubled star’s music, life and legacy.

A one-minute teaser trailer was unveiled this week, giving us a brief flavour of what to expect from the film when it arrives in cinemas this spring.

Take a look here:

The upcoming musical drama has been directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson, who previously made Nowhere Boy, 2009’s biographical film about the teenage years of John Lennon.

Tayloy-Johnson has reunited on the project with Nowhere Boy writer Matt Greenhalgh, who wrote also penned 2007’s award-winning Joy Division drama Control.

Leading the cast as English singer and songwriter Amy Winehouse is Marisa Abela, best known for her acclaimed role in the BBC and HBO’s hit banking series Industry.

Back to Black is described as “a celebration of the most iconic – and much missed – homegrown star of the 21st century.”

“Painting a vivid, vibrant picture of the Camden streets she called home and capturing the struggles of global fame, Back to Black honours Amy’s artistry, wit, and honesty, as well as trying to understand her demons,” the official synopsis reveals. “An unflinching look at the modern celebrity machine and a powerful tribute to a once-in-a-generation talent.”

Marisa Abela will be performing some of Amy’s greatest songs in the film, which has been made with the full support of Universal Music Group and Sony Music Publishing.

It’s good to know that this won’t be one of those biopics which isn’t allowed to use any of the artist’s songs, like David Bowie biopic Stardust a few years ago!

They’ve also got Giles Martin handling music production and his credits include Rocketman and The Beatles: Get Back, so we’re in safe hands here.

When’s the release date?

Back to Black will be out in UK cinemas from Friday 12 April 2024.

A release date in the US has been set for Friday 10 May 2024, so American fans won’t have to wait too long.

Discussing the casting of Marisa Abela as Amy Winehouse, director Sam Taylor-Johnson has said: “Discovering a talent like Marisa Abela is akin to finding gold dust.”

“The moment she looked into the lens at her first audition, I knew she was the perfect actor to play Amy Winehouse,” she recalled.

“She put in an enormous amount of work, and attention to every detail and she trained daily for hours to be able to sing throughout the entire movie,” the filmmaker added. “She doesn’t impersonate Amy, she inhabits her.”

Other familiar faces in the cast will include Jack O’Connell (SAS Rogue Heroes) as Amy’s boyfriend Blake Fielder-Civil and Lesley Manville (World on Fire, The Crown) as Cynthia Winehouse.

Eddie Marsan (Ridley Road) and Juliet Cowan (EastEnders) will play Amy’s parents, Mitch Winehouse and Janis Winehouse-Collins.

Amy Winehouse died on 23 July 2011 after well-documented struggles with substance addiction, mental illness, and bulimia.

She would have turned 40 years old last September.
