BBC has revealed the identity of the new lead detective in Death in Paradise!

The BBC and Red Planet Pictures have revealed that Don Gilet (EastEnders, The Beekeeper) has been cast as the new detective in the smash hit comedy crime procedural Death in Paradise.

When will he take over?

Don will make his debut in the Christmas special later this year, before taking over the reins from Ralf Little in 2025. He will play Detective Inspector Mervin Wilson, the fifth detective to relocate to the idyllic island of Saint Marie from London, and he is not too keen on his new island surroundings.

Death in Paradise has been running for thirteen years on BBC One and BBC iPlayer, with its winning combination of murder mysteries, lovable characters, and beautiful Caribbean scenery making it consistently rank amongst the top three dramas produced by the BBC every year. It has been licensed to over 230 territories around the world and has spawned a successful spin-off series Beyond Paradise. BBC and ABC Australia have already announced plans to make a further spin-off series Return to Paradise which will be set in Australia.

Is the regular cast returning?

Filming has already begun on the Caribbean island of Guadeloupe. The regular cast members are set to return, with Don Warrington (Commissioner Patterson), Shantol Jackson (Naomi Thomas), Ginny Holder (Darlene Curtis), Élizabeth Bourgine (Catherine), and Danny John-Jules (Dwayne Myers).

Don Gilet says:

“Being offered the new lead role in Death in Paradise feels like a deeply loved and incredibly precious jewel has been placed in my hands. This is a big show, with a big heart and the love continually grows for it. It is my intention to never lose sight of that and to remain grateful, humbled and dedicated. Even during those testing times when every sinew is screaming at me to run off the set and dive into the sea, swimming pool or an ice-cold beer – whichever happens to be closer at the time!

Tim Key, Executive Producer for Red Planet Pictures, says:

Don is an amazing actor and we’re delighted that he’s joining us as the show enters another exciting new era. We’ve got huge plans for the new series and beyond, and I can’t wait for the audience to meet Mervin and to see what we’ve got in store…”
