‘Call the Midwife’ star joins cast of ‘The Missing’ spin-off series

Filming has begun on the BBC’s Baptiste, with Call the Midwife star Jessica Raine joining the cast as a lead.

The new crime thriller series will see the return of Tchéky Karyo as insightful but stubborn investigator Julien Baptiste from BBC One’s hit drama The Missing.

The spin-off is written by The Missing‘s creators, Harry and Jack Williams.

The official synopsis for Baptiste reads: “When Julien and his wife are on a visit to Amsterdam, the Chief of Police – who also happens to be an old girlfriend – seeks out his help due to his renowned and methodical crime solving skills. Baptiste is rapidly embroiled in a case that looks beyond the beautiful streets, canals and houses of Amsterdam to the seamy underworld beneath.”

Jessica Raine, who played Jenny Lee in the first three seasons of Call the Midwife, will play a character called Genevieve.

Baptiste writers Harry and Jack Williams commented: “We are so pleased to welcome Jessica Raine to our brilliant cast; her talent and commitment are perfect for Genevieve and we’re really excited to see what she does with the character.”

The cast also includes Tom Hollander (The Night Manager), Alec Secareanu (God’s Own Country), Clare Calbraith (Downton Abbey), Nicholas Woodeson (Taboo), Anastasia Hille (The Missing) and Talisa Garcia (Silent Witness).

Baptiste is shooting in Belgium, Amsterdam and England, and is expected to premiere on BBC One in the UK next year.

Call the Midwife Season 7 is available to buy now on DVD.

The new season of Call the Midwife is currently filming and will air in early 2019.
