‘Dalgliesh’ will return for Season 2 – and Season 3 too!
We’ve got exciting news for fans of Dalgliesh.
Based on the Dalgliesh stories by P.D. James, the crime drama series launched a couple of years ago on Acorn TV and Channel 5.
Starring as the show’s titular Detective Chief Inspector was Bertie Carvel, best known for his roles in Doctor Foster, The Pale Horse, and Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell.

The show was a hit for Acorn TV and Channel 5 and we’re happy to report that there will be more episodes – lots more, in fact…
Dalgleish has been renewed for another two seasons!
Sebastian Cardwell, deputy chief content officer at Paramount in the UK, commented: “Dalgliesh proved incredibly popular with our viewers, and I’m delighted to be working again with New Pictures to bring to life even more stories from P.D James’ crime novels.”
When does Season 2 start?
Six new episodes of Dalgleish began filming in Northern Ireland last summer.
A release date for Season 2 hasn’t yet been confirmed, but it’s expected to premiere in early 2023.
The show’s second season run will once again be comprised of three two-part stories: Death of an Expert Witness, A Certain Justice, and The Murder Room.
Helen Edmundson (The Suspicions of Mr Whicher) is back as lead writer, with Stewart Harcourt (Maigret) co-writing two episodes.
Season 1 previously adapted three of P.D. James’ novels: Shroud For A Nightingale, The Black Tower, and A Taste For Death.
Dalgleish actor Bertie Carvel previously hinted that the series could jump forward into a new decade with each season.
He told Radio Times: “One thing that’s so interesting about the novels is that she’s a brilliant observer, PD James, of social reality and social detail, and sets the novels very much in their time, obviously … I love the idea that maybe Series 2 is set in the mid-’80s. And Series 3 will be set in the mid-’90s.”
When will we see Season 3?
Production on the third season of Dalgleish will commence later in 2023, ahead of its broadcast in 2024.
Bertie Carvel recently joined the cast of The Crown as Prime Minister Tony Blair, and he’ll return with a bigger role in the upcoming final season later this year.

Once filming on the sixth season of The Crown has wrapped, Carvel will be available to resume work on Dalgleish.
There’s no news yet on which P.D. James stories will be adapted in Season 3.
The English author wrote 14 novels featuring the character of Adam Dalgliesh between 1962 and 2008, so hopefully the series will continue for some time.
Dalgliesh is available to watch on Amazon Prime Video.
