The first ‘Downton Abbey’ movie is coming to Netflix soon!
Great news for any Downton Abbey fans who’ve still not seen the first movie!
It’s been revealed that Downton Abbey: The Motion Picture – to give the spin-off its official and rather grand title – will be streaming on Netflix in the US next month.
Originally released in September 2019, nearly four years after the last ever episode of ITV’s hit period drama series, the movie opened to mostly positive reviews and went on to gross nearly $200 million worldwide.
Watch the trailer here:
The movie finds the Crawley family and their army of maids, butlers, cooks, and assorted domestics thrown into disarray by the impending arrival of King George V and Queen Mary.
“The year is 1927 and the Crawleys are tightening the old, bespoke belt, making day with slightly fewer servants,” the official synopsis tells us. “In order to get things in ship-shape, they ask the retired head butler Carson to return to the estate.”
When’s the movie on Netflix?
Downton Abbey: The Motion Picture will be streaming on Netflix in the US from Thursday 16 November.
The film reunited nearly the entire cast for this next chapter of the Downton story.
Several new faces were also introduced, including Imelda Staunton (Harry Potter) as Lady Maud Bagshaw and Tuppence Middleton (The Imitation Game) as Lucy Smith.
Both of these two characters returned for last year’s sequel, Downton Abbey: A New Era.
Netflix viewers will also see Imelda Staunton reprise her role as Queen Elizabeth II in the final season of The Crown in November.
In the meantime, American audiences can catch up on all 52 episodes of Downton Abbey on Amazon Prime Video with this free 30-day trial!
We’re still waiting for official news on the possibility of a third Downton movie, and writer Julian Fellowes thinks the franchise might have “run its course,” so we’re not expecting an update anytime soon.
But there is a new Downton Abbey parody coming up called Fackham Hall, which sounds like it could be fun.
The complete Downton Abbey collection is available on DVD on Amazon.
