‘Ghosts’ Season 5 confirms UK release date on BBC One for final episodes

It’s been announced when the final season of Ghosts begins!

From the creators and stars of Horrible Histories, the hit BBC series launched in 2019 and last year’s Season 4 was the UK’s biggest comedy of 2022 on broadcast TV.

So it was a surprise when the team announced in April that the upcoming fifth run will be the show’s last.

“After five incredible years haunting the halls of Button House, we have decided that the time is right to let our beloved sitcom Ghosts rest in peace,” the cast revealed.

“We could never have imagined the reception the show has enjoyed, or the fun we have had making it,” they added.

Fortunately, we still have six brand new episodes to look forward to this autumn.

Watch the trailer here:

As we begin Season 5 , while Alison and Mike search for new ways to keep Button House going after the gatehouse fire, they receive some unexpected news that will bring about major changes for them and the Ghosts.

Elsewhere, the Ghosts investigate the mysterious details of Kitty’s death, Pat is inspired to create some new entertainment for the gang when the Ghosts lose their appetite for Food Club, and after Robin makes an outlandish prediction, the Ghosts contemplate their legacies.

When’s the release date?

Ghosts returns at 8.30pm on Friday 6 October on BBC One, and streaming on BBC iPlayer.

Writers and creators Mathew Baynton, Simon Farnaby, Martha Howe-Douglas, Jim Howick, Laurence Rickard and Ben Willbond will all be reprising their various roles.

They’ll be joined once again by Lolly Adefope as Kitty, with Charlotte Ritchie and Kiell Smith-Bynoe back as Alison and Mike.

Here’s the official synopsis for the first episode of the new season: “Mike approaches Alison to discuss their finances following the loss of their B&B business.

“However, Alison is more preoccupied with plotting revenge on the Ghosts for April Fool’s Day and recruits a playful Humphrey to execute her plans. But who will prove the hardest to fool?

“Meanwhile, Mike is shocked to find someone from their insurance company on his doorstep – an unannounced visit to check the details of the gatehouse fire. Can Mike convince her that lightning really can strike thrice?”

It’s not currently certain if the show’s finale will be the sixth episode of Season 5, or if Ghosts will bow out with another Christmas special in December.

“We are so proud of Ghosts, and particularly the way that audiences have taken it to their hearts,” commented executive producer Alison Carpenter.

“We hope that audiences will enjoy this final series and feel that we have given these beloved characters a fitting send-off,” she added.

Over in the US, the British version of Ghosts will be airing on CBS on Thursday nights from 16 November, due to the ongoing writers’ and actors’ strikes in America.

Ghosts star Charlotte Ritchie has been filming the upcoming ninth season of Grantchester this summer, in which she’ll return as Will’s wife Bonnie.

Ghosts is available on DVD on Amazon.
