‘Mr Malcolm’s List’ confirms UK release date – watch the trailer!

New period drama movie Mr Malcolm’s List is heading to UK cinemas this summer.

Based on the novel by Suzanne Allain, the film is set in Regency London in 1818.

The cast features a number of familiar faces, including Theo James (Sanditon), Freida Pinto (Slumdog Millionaire), Sope Dirisu (The Halcyon), Zawe Ashton (The Handmaid’s Tale), and Oliver Jackson-Cohen (The Haunting of Bly Manor).

Described as “a whirlwind of sumptuous fashion, lavish country getaways, a glittering masquerade ball and high-society chicanery,” Mr Malcolm’s List was released in US cinemas back in June.

We can now confirm that Mr Malcolm’s List will arrive in UK cinemas on Friday 26th August.

Writer Suzanne Allain has revealed that she originally imagined her tale of an eligible bachelor with a stringent list of requirements for his bride as a comedic short story set in contemporary times.

Once she completed the piece, however, she realised that it worked better as “a farce of historic proportions,” as she explains here: “It occurred to me that this was a much better fit for 19th-century England, specifically Jane Austen’s era. It was a time when the pursuit of a suitable match was all-consuming.”

The official synopsis reads: “A young British woman takes revenge on the man who jilted her by convincing her best friend to pose as his perfect match in Mr. Malcolm’s List, a sparkling Regency era romantic comedy.

“The Honorable Mr. Jeremy Malcolm (Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísù) is handsome, well-connected and the epitome of the famous opening line of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice: “a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife.” So when he, the most eligible bachelor in London, escorts society beauty Julia Thistlewaite (Zawe Ashton) to the opera, all eyes are on the famous society duo. But after a single date, Mr. Malcolm declines to call on her again destroying Julia’s reputation.

“Humiliated by his public rejection — and by a widely distributed caricature depicting the events — Julia learns Mr. Malcolm has a secret list of the qualities he is looking for in a wife. After prying his requirements out of her amiable cousin, Lord Cassidy (Oliver Jackson-Cohen),

“Julia invites her childhood friend Selina Dalton (Freida Pinto) to visit her in London and proposes turning Selina into Mr. Malcolm’s perfect match — only to have Selina present her own list of unattainable attributes once Mr. Malcolm is ensnared.

“But Julia’s plot begins to go awry when Selina realizes that Mr. Malcolm is not the heartless cad Julia has described, and may in fact be the man she loves. As the couple circles each other warily, Captain Henry Ossory (Theo James) arrives on the scene seeking out Selina on the
advice of his aunt, but instead finds himself drawn to Julia.

“Meanwhile, Julia, jealously fuming from the sidelines, plots to bring her scheme to an explosive conclusion — but is she missing out on her own chance at true love?”

While Theo James didn’t reprise his role as Sidney in the second season of Sanditon, the Downton Abbey actor was back on our TV screens recently in HBO’s new adaptation of The Time Traveller’s Wife.

Written by Sherlock creator Steven Moffat, the mini-series is now streaming on HBO Max.
