‘Peaky Blinders’ movie isn’t definitely happening, hints Cillian Murphy
The Peaky Blinders movie could be a long way off still – if it gets made at all!
A big screen follow-up to the BBC’s hit period drama series had been rumoured for some time and we got official confirmation that it was in development two and half years ago.
As filming began on the final season in January 2021, the show’s creator Steven Knight announced that “while the TV series will be coming to an end, the story will continue in another form.”
“Covid changed our plans,” he revealed. “But I can say that my plan from the beginning was to end Peaky with a movie. That is what is going to happen.”
We then learned in the autumn of 2021 that the movie was set to begin filming “in 18 months time.”
However, that planned start date has come and gone, with no sign of production beginning.
Currently promoting his much-anticipated new historical drama Oppenheimer, Tommy Shelby actor Cillian Murphy‘s latest update sounds like the odds of the Peaky Blinders movie being made at all are from certain.
“If there’s more story there, I’d love to do it,” the Irish star told Rolling Stone. “But it has to be right.”
“Steve Knight wrote 36 hours of television, and we left on such a high. I’m really proud of that last series,” he explained. “So, it would have to feel legitimate and justified to do more.”
Peaky Blinders writer Steven Knight has been having an insanely busy few years.
His upcoming projects include the return of SAS Rogue Heroes, another Second World War series titled Roads to Freedom, Victorian boxing drama A Thousand Blows for Disney+, a show called This Town about Birmingham’s early ’80s music scene, and possibly (one day) the second season of Taboo.
Oh, and he’s also writing a new Star Wars movie right now!
Cillian Murphy’s Oppenheimer is set for release in cinemas later this month and you can watch the epic trailer here:
Murphy is also working on an adaptation of Irish novel Small Things Like These.
Peaky Blinders launched in 2013, telling the story of a crime family in Birmingham, England in the 1920s.
Running for six seasons, the show aired its final episode in April 2022.
Peaky Blinders is available on DVD on Amazon.
