Cillian Murphy is adapting Irish novel ‘Small Things Like These’

A movie based on Claire Keegan’s Small Things Like These is now filming.

The feature adaptation is being produced by Peaky Blinders actor Cillian Murphy, who’s also starring in the movie.

First published in 2021 and shortlisted for last year’s Booker Prize, Keegan’s acclaimed novel is set in an Irish town in the mid-1980s.

The story follows devoted father Bill Furlong (Murphy), who discovers startling secrets being kept by the convent in his town, along with some shocking truths about his own life.

Production is already underway in Ireland, reuniting Cillian Murphy with Peaky Blinders director Tim Mielants.

Murphy commented: “I’m honored and thrilled to have the opportunity to bring Claire Keegan’s magnificent novel to the screen.”

“We have gathered together a phenomenal team of creatives to make this film, and found exceptional partners in AE, a studio led by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck — actors and filmmakers I have admired for many years,” he added.

Alongside Cillian Murphy, the cast of Small Things Like These also includes Emily Watson (Gosford Park, The Theory of Everything) and Belfast actor Ciarán Hinds.

Small Things Like These is expected to arrive in cinemas in 2024.

The synopsis for the book reads: “It is 1985 in a small Irish town. During the weeks leading up to Christmas, Bill Furlong, a coal merchant and family man faces into his busiest season.

“Early one morning, while delivering an order to the local convent, Bill makes a discovery which forces him to confront both his past and the complicit silences of a town controlled by the church.”

The movie adaptation of Claire Keegan’s previous novel Foster – titled The Quiet Girl – recently became Ireland’s first film to be nominated for an International Feature Oscar.
