‘Sanditon’ reveals exciting new plot hints for Season 2
With filming on the new season of Sanditon underway, we’ve got more details on where the story goes next.
Season 2 finally commenced production earlier this month!
Based on Jane Austen’s unfinished final novel, ITV’s period drama series premiered in 2019, but was cancelled in 2020 despite Season 1 ending on a cliffhanger.
Fortunately, following an amazing campaign from Sanditon fans, the show was renewed for two more seasons this May.
Dickensian writer Justin Young is taking over from Sanditon creator Andrew Davies as the show’s lead writer, although Davies is still involved as an executive producer.
Several new writers have also been announced.
While actor Theo James won’t be back as Sidney, Season 2’s returning main characters have been confirmed, along with six new regular cast members.
Much of the plot for the second season is understandably being kept secret, but we do know that the new episodes will continue the story nine months after the events of Season 1’s finale.
The official Season 2 synopsis reads: “Charlotte returns to the beautiful seaside resort and soon attracts the attention of not one, but two new men.
“And, in her last summer season before turning 21, Georgiana Lambe (Crystal Clarke), keen to forge her own identity, gets up to mischief in the name of love…but will she run the risk of being lonelier than ever before?
“The Parkers are back, as Tom (Kris Marshall) strives to rebuild Sanditon. But there are many unforeseen issues awaiting him, while the secrets and lies of the dysfunctional Denhams continue to rock the foundations of the sunny seaside town.”
It continues: “The Army arrives to make Sanditon their new base and with them bring potential new romances, friendships and challenges for the residents.
“New characters this season include Alexander Colbourne (Ben Lloyd-Hughes), a mysterious resident with a complex family history, who is in stark contrast to self-assured war hero Colonel Francis Lennox (Tom Weston-Jones), his rival for Charlotte’s affections.
“We also meet Charlotte’s spirited younger sister, Alison Heywood (Rosie Graham), who comes to Sanditon to pursue her own romantic dream. Alison is soon acquainted with the handsome and charming Captain William Carter (Maxim Ays).”
The synopsis also teases: “Other intriguing newcomers include Captain Declan Fraser (Frank Blake), a courageous character (if a little rough around the edges), and the striking and flamboyant Charles Lockhart (Alexander Vlahos), a Byronic artist who arrives to paint portraits of Sanditon’s fashionable and wealthy residents.”
We expect Season 2 will premiere in early 2022 on BritBox in the UK, before airing on ITV, and it’ll air on PBS Masterpiece in the US.
Season 3 is set to follow in 2023.
