‘Sanditon’ unveils team of new writers for Season 2

The writing team for the new season of Sanditon has been revealed.

Season 2 finally started filming in England this month.

Based on Jane Austen’s unfinished final novel, ITV’s period drama series premiered back in 2019, but was then cancelled early last year despite Season 1’s cliffhanger ending.

However, following an incredible campaign from fans, Sanditon received a surprise two-season renewal this spring!

We can now confirm who’ll be writing the second season’s six brand new episodes.

Screenwriter and playwright Justin Young is taking over from Sanditon creator Andrew Davies as the lead writer and showrunner for Season 2.

He wrote four episodes of Season 1, so the show is in safe hands!

Young’s previous credits include episodes of Death in Paradise, Ripper Street, Dickensian, EastEnders, and Casualty.

He was also the head writer on BBC One’s long-running medical drama Holby City for three years, so has plenty of experience overseeing a show.

Andrew Davies, however, will still be on board as a writer and executive producer.

Joining Young and Davies to contribute to the scripts are four new writers:

Colin Bytheway is writing the second episode of Season 2, having previously been a writer on Hustle, Casualty, Death in Paradise, and Grafters.

Janice Okoh has written for Hetty Feather and Doctors.

Ellen Taylor was a writer on The Musketeers, and also has credits on Coronation Street, Waterloo Road, and One of Us.

And Robin French has written episodes of The Great and hit BBC comedy Cuckoo, as well as numerous theatre productions.

Executive producer Belinda Campbell commented: “We’re thrilled to be able to invite viewers back to Sanditon for not just one but two further visits!

“Justin Young and Andrew Davies’ sensational scripts are relevant, timely and captivating and we can’t wait to share all the exciting new developments we have in store for our much loved characters.

“Now, more than ever, I think we could all do with some joy on our TV screens as well as a healthy dose of fresh sea air.”

Season 2’s returning cast members have been announced, as well as a number of new characters.

We’re expecting Season 2 to premiere in early 2022 on BritBox in the UK, before airing on ITV, and it’ll air on PBS Masterpiece in the US.

Season 3 will likely follow at some point in 2023.

Susanne Simpson from Masterpiece has promised that “audiences can expect romance, humor and plenty of twists and turns in these new seasons of Sanditon.”

Sanditon is available on DVD on Amazon.
