BritBox confirms ‘Sister Boniface Mysteries’ Season 2 release date

It’s been announced when Sister Boniface Mysteries is back!

A spin-off from Father Brown set in the 1960s, BritBox’s murder-mystery drama launched last year.

The light-hearted crime series stars Lorna Watson (Watson & Oliver), reprising her role as nun, moped rider, wine maker and part-time forensic scientist Sister Boniface from an early Father Brown episode.

Each episode follows the sleuthing nun as she uses the latest techniques for tracking down killers.

Created by Father Brown writer Jude Tindall, the show was a hit with audiences and ten brand new episodes began filming last summer.

Executive producer Will Trotter previously commented: “We are absolutely thrilled to see Sister Boniface return for a second series. Jude Tindall and the team of writers have created unforgettable characters full of wit and mischief.

“Lorna Watson’s performance is as forensic as her character – the sharp intelligence, charm and warmth she brings to the role is an irresistible combination.”

When’s the release date?

The second season of Sister Boniface Mysteries will premiere in the US streaming exclusively on BritBox on Tuesday 4th April.

Over in the UK, it’s expected to air on the Drama channel again, as Season 1 did in 2022.

The official synopsis for Season 2 reads: “Sister Boniface is back in the habit, returning as the Great Slaughter Constabulary’s crime-solving secret weapon. Countryside criminals should start saying their Hail Marys, as Boniface’s faith in forensics is only rivaled by her passion for investigation.

“This series, the sister will force a murderer into checkmate at a chess tournament, take a spin through a pirate radio station, and defend her reputation as the conviction of her greatest adversary, The Pear Tree Poisoner, comes into question.”

The first season featured Father Brown himself, with actor Mark Williams making a cameo appearance.

While we’re not yet sure if he’ll be back in Season 2, regular Sister Boniface Mysteries cast members Max Brown (Downton Abbey), Jerry Iwu (Sex Education), Miranda Raison (MI-5), and Ami Metcalf (Upstairs Downstairs) are all returning alongside star Lorna Brown.

Based on the classic stories by GK Chesterton, Father Brown returned for a tenth season earlier this year.

There’s no news yet on an eleventh season commission…

But as one of the BBC’s most popular daytime series, we’d be very surprised if Father Brown wasn’t back with new episodes in 2024.

Hopefully alongside a third season of Sister Boniface Mysteries!
