Netflix confirms ‘The Crown’ release date for Season 5

It’s been officially revealed when the next season of The Crown will premiere on Netflix.

Dramatising the reign of the late Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom, the hit period drama series first debuted six years ago.

The Crown is once again introducing an all-new cast when it returns with Season 5, following 2020’s award-winning fourth season with Olivia Colman.

Imelda Staunton is taking over the role of the Queen for the show’s fifth and sixth seasons.

The 66-year-old English actress is best known for her roles in Cranford, the Harry Potter movies, and the recent Downton Abbey sequel.

She’s joined in the brand new episodes by Jonathan Pryce (The Two Popes) as Prince Phillip, and Lesley Manville (World on Fire) as Princess Margaret.

Elizabeth Debicki (The Night Manager) is playing Princess Diana, alongside Dominic West (The Pursuit of Loveas the new Prince Charles.

Other big names include Olivia Williams (The Sixth Sense) as Camilla Parker Bowles, Elementary star Jonny Lee Miller as Prime Minister John Major, Bertie Carvel (Doctor Foster) as Prime Minister Tony Blair, and James Bond star Timothy Dalton as Peter Townsend.

The 10 new episodes will cover what is seen as the Royals’ most difficult decade in living memory, including a number of marital splits and scandals, the fire at Windsor Castle, and Princess Diana’s death in 1997.

As part of Netflix’s global fan event Tadum at the weekend, it was announced that Season 5 will be released on the streaming service on Wednesday 9th November.

Alluding to the cracks rippling through the Royal family in the upcoming season, this poster was also unveiled:

Queen Elizabeth II passed away earlier this month at Balmoral Castle in Scotland, at the age of 96.

To mark this sad occasion, we recently picked out some of the best movies, TV series, and documentaries depicting the life of Britain’s longest reigning monarch.

The sixth and final season of The Crown will arrive towards the end next year, although it’s expected that the show will only dramatise up until around the mid-2000s.
