‘The Essex Serpent’ trailer: First look at Tom Hiddleston’s new Victorian drama

The first trailer for Apple’s upcoming TV adaptation of The Essex Serpent has been released!

From the producers of Netflix’s acclaimed The Power of the Dog, the new British period drama is set in England in 1883.

Indian Summers writer Anna Symon, who previously penned Mrs Wilson for the BBC, has adapted Sarah Perry’s 2016 novel.

Leading the six-parter mini-series are Tom Hiddleston (The Night Manager) and Claire Danes (Homeland).

The Essex Serpent started filming last year in Essex, England, with Danes replacing original star Keira Knightly due to personal reasons.

The cast also includes Frank Dillane (In The Heart of the Sea), Clémence Poésy (Harry Potter), Hayley Squires (Call the Midwife), Dixie Egerickx (The Secret Garden), Jamael Westman (Hamilton), and Michael Jibson (Les Misérables).

The Essex Serpent will premiere exclusively on Apple TV+ around the world on Friday 13th May.

The following five episodes will then each debut weekly every Friday through to 10th June.

An official synopsis for the series reads: “A widow, a village vicar, and a mythical beast… are the rumors true?

The Essex Serpent follows London widow Cora Seaborne (Danes) who moves to Essex to investigate reports of a mythical serpent. She forms a surprising bond of science and skepticism with the local pastor (Hiddleston), but when tragedy strikes, locals accuse her of attracting the creature.”

Sarah Perry’s novel The Essex Serpent is available on Amazon.
