‘The Last Kingdom’ will return with a movie after the final season

We’ve got a very exciting update for fans of The Last Kingdom!

Set in the late 9th century AD, when England is divided into seven separate kingdoms, the epic historical drama series is based on the Saxon Stories novels by Bernard Cornwell.

The Last Kingdom premiered in 2015 on BBC Two and BBC America, before moving to Netflix with its third season.

Ten new episodes started filming in Hungary, Budapest earlier this year, with production wrapping in June.

Netflix revealed this summer that the upcoming fifth season will sadly be the show’s last.

However, it’s not all bad news…

It was officially announced on Sunday at MCM London Comic Con that there’s going to be a Last Kingdom spin-off movie!

The film will be titled Seven Kings Must Die and production will begin next year.

Alexander Dreymon will reprise his role as Uhtred in the movie.

The actor commented: “It’s been such a privilege to tell Uhtred’s story for five seasons. I’m so grateful to our fans. They have been immensely loyal to The Last Kingdom and thanks to their support, the TLK team is getting together for another round.”

He promised: “It’s going to be an epic end to a wonderful journey.”

Producer Nigel Marchant explained that while Season 5 will “fully concludes the series,” the team felt like “there was always one more story that we wanted to tell.”

The final season of The Last Kingdom looks set to premiere on Netflix in early 2022.

Teasing what to expect from the show’s final season, director Jon East hinted this summer: “The last block was a monster, eclipsing in complexity/scale all I’ve directed on this great show since I joined in 2016.”

He added: “The last season is ending in EPIC style! Big thanks to the top team that worked with tireless devotion to make it so.”

Season 5 is based on the ninth and tenth books in Bernard Cornwell’s 13-part seriesThe Warriors of the Storm and The Flame Bearer.

Joining the cast are a number of new cast members, including Patrick Robinson (Sitting in Limbo) as Father Benedict, Sonya Cassidy (Humans) as Eadgifu, and Harry Gilby (Tolkien) as Aethelstan.

The Seven Kings Must Die movie is expected to be released on Netflix sometime in 2023.

The Last Kingdom is available on DVD on Amazon.
