Helen Mirren’s WW2 drama ‘White Bird’ confirms new release date

We’ve finally got a release date for White Bird: A Wonder Story!

First announced two years ago, the film was originally set to arrive in cinemas last October, but was delayed.

White Bird is based on R.J. Palacio’s book and is a companion story to 2017’s inspiring drama Wonder, which was also based on a novel by Palacio.

The “uplifting movie about how one act of kindness can live on forever” charts the story of a young Jewish girl hidden away by a boy and his family in Nazi-occupied France during World War II.

Gillian Anderson (The Crown) and Helen Mirren (The Queen) are amongst the familiar faces in the cast.

They’re joined by rising young stars Ariella Glaser and Orlando Schwerdt, with Bryce Gheisar reprising his role as Julian Albans from Wonder.

Filmed in the Czech Republic in 2021, the movie comes from filmmaker Marc Forster, the director of Finding Neverland and Christopher Robin.

When’s the release date?

Lionsgate officially revealed today that White Bird: A Wonder Story will be released in select theaters in the US from Friday 18th August, ahead of a wider release in theaters everywhere on Friday 25th August.

We expect an announcement for the UK release date to be made soon.

Spain will be getting the movie on Wednesday 11th October.

Gillian Anderson can currently be seen in Netflix’s The Pale Blue Eye.

Based on the novel by Louis Bayard, the new 1830s period drama movie also stars Christian Bale, with Harry Potter actor Harry Melling playing writer Edgar Allan Poe.

The official synopsis for White Bird: A Wonder Story reads: “…we follow Julian (Bryce Gheisar), who has struggled to belong ever since he was expelled from his former school for his treatment of Auggie Pullman.

“To transform his life, Julian’s grandmother (Helen Mirren) finally reveals to Julian her own story of courage — during her youth in Nazi-occupied France, a boy shelters her from mortal danger.

“They find first love in a stunning, magical world of their own creation, while the boy’s mother (Gillian Anderson) risks everything to keep her safe.”

Wonder is available to watch on Amazon Prime Video.
