‘Wolf Hall’ confirms returning cast for ‘The Mirror and the Light’ series

The BBC has announced who’ll be back in the new season of Wolf Hall.

It was revealed last week that the Emmy-nominated historical drama will be returning for a follow-up.

BBC Two’s hit 2015 series adapted Hilary Mantel‘s novels Wolf Hall and Bring Up the Bodies.

After years of rumours, it’s now been confirmed that the final novel in Mantel’s trilogy is getting an adaptation too!

Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light is set to commence production in the UK this autumn for the BBC and PBS.

The brand new episodes will reunite the creative team from 2015, with Oscar-nominated screenwriter Peter Straughan (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy) returning to write the scripts.

Director Peter Kosminsky (Wuthering Heights, The Undeclared War) – winner of an incredible seven BAFTAs – is also back to helm the series.

We’re very pleased to report that many of the original Wolf Hall cast members will be reprising their roles too.

Mark Rylance (Dunkirk, The BFG) will be back as Thomas Cromwell, alongside Damian Lewis (Homeland) playing King Henry VIII.

They’ll be joined by Jonathan Pryce (The Crown) as Cardinal Wolsey, with Kate Phillips (Miss Scarlet and the Duke) returning as Henry VIII’s third wife Jane Seymour, and Lilit Lesser playing Princess Mary, the daughter of Henry and his first wife Catherine of Aragon.

The BBC says that “further returning and new cast members will be announced in due course.”

Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light is expected to premiere in late 2024 on BBC One and streaming on BBC iPlayer in the UK, and on PBS Masterpiece in the US.

“I am incredibly proud to bring Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light to Masterpiece and the American audience,” commented executive producer Susanne Simpson.

“It is thrilling that such brilliant actors as Mark Rylance and Damian Lewis will reprise their roles for this final chapter of Thomas Cromwell’s story,” she added. “The level of excellence on and off screen for this series is incomparable.”

The original Wolf Hall series is available to watch on the PBS Masterpiece channel with this free 7-day trial!
