‘World on Fire’ is back: Season 2 has finally started filming!
Filming has begun at last on the long-awaited second season of World on Fire.
From the makers of Endeavour and Poldark, the Second World War drama launched in the UK almost three years ago.
Opening with the German invasion of Poland in September 1939 and ending with the Battle of Britain in 1940, the first season of World on Fire took viewers across the first year of World War II, from ordinary life in Manchester to the beaches of Dunkirk.
The show received great reviews and was a hit with viewers on BBC One, averaging 6.7 million viewers.
A second season of World on Fire was officially announced in November 2019, and the new episodes were originally set to commence shooting in 2020.
However, production was delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic and things had all gone very quiet since then…
Well, for fans still eagerly waiting to find out what happens next after that tense Season 1 cliffhanger, we’ve got some brilliant news.
Season 2 has now started filming in Northern Ireland!
Production is currently underway on six new 60-minute episodes of World on Fire.
The scripts are once again written by series creator Peter Bowker (The A Word, Desperate Romantics), alongside Rachel Bennette (Ripper Street, Lark Rise to Candleford) and Matt Jones (The Split, Mr Selfridge).
The official synopsis for Season 2 reads: “October 1940. Lone pilots are sent to destroy German bombers prowling the skies above Manchester as the Northern Blitz begins. The true reality of war has arrived in Britain.”
We’re told that the new season will take viewers “from the streets of Britain into occupied France, Nazi Germany, and to the sands of the North African desert, where British troops struggle alongside Indian Sappers and Australian Diggers to adapt to a very different kind of combat.”
Ben Irving, Acting Director of BBC Drama, commented: “With a range of intriguing, untold stories that put ordinary people at the centre of history, and a first-rate ensemble of both new and returning characters, it’s a real pleasure to see filming on World on Fire series two now underway.”
Season 2 is expected to premiere next year on BBC One and BBC iPlayer in the UK, and on PBS in the US.
World on Fire is available to watch on Amazon Prime Video.
