‘Game of Thrones’ star will play Oscar Wilde’s wife in ‘An Ideal Wife’ film

Emilia Clarke has a new period drama movie lined up!

The 36-year-old English actress is best known for her role as Daenerys Targaryen in HBO’s Game of Thrones between 2011 and 2019.

She’s now set to lead the cast of An Ideal Wife, playing Irish children’s author Constance Lloyd.

Constance married playwright Oscar Wilde in 1884, and was the mother of their two sons, Cyril and Vyvyan.

The film will follow the awakening Constance Lloyd experienced when she discovered that Wilde was gay, during a time when this meant her husband would face imprisonment.

Variety report that An Ideal Wife will “shed light on Lloyd, who was an author and feminist activist who took part in the dress reform movement, which campaigned to allow women to dress in comfortable clothing rather than the stifling Victorian dresses of the era…

“However, after Wilde received a two-year prison term for homosexuality, which was still illegal at the time (it would only be decriminalized in England and Wales in 1967), Lloyd moved to Switzerland with their children, and distanced them from the writer.”

An Ideal Wife is being directed by filmmaker Sophie Hyde, who helmed last year’s acclaimed Emma Thompson movie Good Luck to You, Leo Grande.

Emilia Clarke is back on our screens next in Marvel’s upcoming UK-based action-adventure series Secret Invasion, starring alongside Olivia Colman.

Secret Invasion premieres on Disney+ this spring.

Clarke is also set to play Victorian poet Elizabeth Barrett Browning in a new movie from the makers of Belle.

Let Me Count the Ways was first announced way back in 2019, but there has been little news on the project since then.

Game of Thrones is available on DVD.
