‘Call the Midwife’ confirms Season 13 filming has started!

Production has begun on the new season of Call the Midwife in England.

Set during the 1950s-1960s, the BBC’s hit period drama about a group of nurse midwives in the East End of London concluded its twelfth run earlier in the year.

Luckily for fans, the show has been renewed for another three years, so we know Call the Midwife will be running until Season 15 in 2026 – and hopefully beyond!

“Fifteen series is a tremendous achievement and it’s a testament to the passion and dedication of our cast and crew, of whom I’m very proud,” said executive producer Dame Pippa Harris.

“I can’t wait to see what she has in store for us and our extremely loyal audience in the future,” she added.

Well, the fifteenth season of Call the Midwife might still be a while off, but Season 13 just got a little bit closer!

The show’s official Facebook page announced yesterday that cameras are now rolling on this year’s Christmas special.

Once the festive filming is complete, eight brand new episodes will then start shooting for broadcast in 2024.

“It’s official – Call the Midwife has begun filming for Series 13!! 🤩🎬🎥🙌🍾” confirmed the Facebook announcement.

The post on Facebook was accompanied by a lovely photo from the set of actors Cliff Parisi, Zephryn Taitte and Annabelle Apsion with a Season 13 clapperboard:

The show’s Facebook page also revealed that “our intrepid Buckles, accompanied by the lovely Cyril, have the honour of beginning Series 13 with the opening scene!”

“We have SO MUCH to show you – beginning with our Christmas Special – so stay tuned, ” they teased.

Fans were quick to share their joy, with one writing: “That’s great news! Best programme on TV.”

“Hope you have as much fun making the programmes as I do watching them,” an excited viewer wrote.

Another was glad to see the return of Cyril after last season’s heartbreak with Lucille, saying: “Zephryn has the most glorious smile, I do hope he has many reasons to use it this series.”

Last month the Call the Midwife cast and production team met up for a pre-production meeting, and let slip which cast members would be returning.

They were keen to stress, however, that the actors in the photo were only “those [who were] able to attend.”

So we’re still hopeful that the absent Helen George will be reprising her role as Trixie, despite her stage commitments in the current UK production of The King and I.

She’s been touring the country recently as Anna Leonowens in the hit musical, to great acclaim, with more London dates confirmed for 2024.

The next season of Call the Midwife is expected to premiere on BBC One and PBS early next year, following a Christmas special this December.
