It’s been announced when the new season of Dalgliesh begins.

The 1970s-set crime drama series launched in 2021 on Acorn TV and Channel 5, based on the Dalgliesh stories by P.D. James.

Starring Bertie Carvel (Doctor Foster) as the show’s titular Detective Chief Inspector, Dalgliesh became a hit and was renewed for two more seasons.

If you missed it last time, you can catch up on the first season on Acorn TV with a free 7-day trial!

Six new episodes started filming in Northern Ireland last summer, and fans don’t have to wait too much longer to see them.

Guest stars in the new season include Daisy Waterstone (The Durrells), Sorcha Cusack (Father Brown), David Bamber (Flesh & Blood), and Jeremy Irvine (War Horse).

Adapting another three of P.D. James’ novels – Death of an Expert WitnessA Certain Justice, and The Murder Room – the second season of Dalgliesh sees the enigmatic investigator and poet tackle even more mind-boggling mysteries in the grubby heart of ’70s England.

The new cases involve the murder of a young girl, which leads to a forensic biologist being found dead in his lab, the suspicious murder of an illustrious but controversial defence barrister, and the case of a young doctor being set alight on museum grounds where it seems everyone has something to gain from the crime.

When’s the release date?

Season 2 will premiere on Acorn TV in North America, New Zealand and Australia on Monday 24th April with Death of an Expert Witness.

A new two-part story will drop each Monday, with A Certain Justice landing on 1st May, and The Murder Room arriving on 8th May.

In the UK, Dalgliesh begins airing on Channel 5 at 9pm on Thursday 27th April, with Death of an Expert Witness concluding the next day.

The remaining two stories will air on Thursday and Friday nights over the following weeks.

Season 2’s DVD release has also been confirmed for Monday 15th May in the UK.

We’ve got the official synopses for Season 2’s stories here:

“In Death Of An Expert Witness, when a young girl is found murdered in a field, the scientific examination of the exhibits is just a routine job for the staff of Hoggatt’s forensic science laboratory, but when the senior biologist is found dead in his laboratory, Dalgliesh is called to the bleak fens of East Anglia, where the murderer is lying in wait to strike again.

A Certain Justice sees Venetia Aldridge QC, a distinguished barrister, agree to defend Garry Ashe, accused of the brutal murder of his aunt. Just four weeks later, Miss Aldridge is found dead at her desk. As Dalgliesh narrows the field of suspects, a second brutal murder draws them into greater complexities of intrigue and evil.

“Finally, in The Murder Room, Dalgliesh is acquainted with the Dupayne Museum and its sinister murder room celebrating notorious crimes committed in the interwar years. When he is called to investigate the killing of one of the trustees, it seems everyone has something to gain from the crime. When it becomes clear that the killer is prepared to kill again, Dalgliesh knows that to solve this case he has to get into the mind of a ruthless killer.”

A third season of Dalgliesh will begin production in Northern Ireland later in 2023.

“Bertie Carvel’s expert portrayal of Chief Inspector Adam Dalgliesh delivers a lasting charm and sophistication that is unmatched and, clearly, a must-watch,” said Catherine Mackin at Acorn Media Enterprises. “We are absolutely elated to return for not one, but two, mysterious and compelling seasons.”

Bertie Carvel will also be back on our screens this winter in the final season of The Crown.

He made his debut as Prime Minister Tony Blair in the fifth season of Netflix’s royal drama.

Dalgliesh is available to watch on Acorn TV with a free 7-day trial.
