‘Derry Girls’ releases cracking trailer for final season: ‘The wait is over’

Channel 4 celebrated St Patrick’s Day yesterday with a brand new Derry Girls trailer!

Set in Derry, Northern Ireland in the mid-’90s, the charming comedy series follows a group of four best friends, along with hapless English cousin James, as they navigate their teenage years in a Catholic girls’ secondary school during the end of the Troubles.

Derry Girls burst on to our screens in 2018 and a second season aired in 2019, but fans have had a long wait for its return since then.

Following delays due to the coronavirus pandemic, six brand new episodes finally began filming last September, with all the main cast returning.

The news was bittersweet, however, as it also came alongside the announcement that Season 3 will be the show’s final run.

Derry Girls creator and writer Lisa McGee explained last year: “It was always the plan to say goodbye after three [seasons]. Derry Girls is a coming of age story following five ridiculous teenagers as they slowly… very slowly… start to become adults, while around them the place they call home starts to change too and Northern Ireland enters a new more hopeful phase — which was a small, magical window of time.”

She added: “Derry Girls is a love letter to the place I come from and the people who shaped me. It has been an honour to write it and I will be forever proud of everything it’s achieved….”

Channel 4 has revealed the third season will see that “while Northern Ireland is growing up, this gang of eejits certainly aren’t anytime soon – while there’s hope in the air that The Troubles may finally be over, their troubles are only just getting started as they get ever closer to “adulthood”…”

Season 3 is expected to premiere in the UK on Channel 4 and All 4 this spring.

The first two seasons are currently streaming free on All 4.

Internationally the show is carried on Netflix and we’ll let you know when the new episodes will land as soon it’s confirmed.

In the meantime, Derry Girls star Nicola Coughlan, who plays Clare, is back soon as Penelope Featherington in the second season of Bridgerton!

Netflix’s smash hit period drama series returns later this month.

The Bridgerton novels are available on Amazon.
