Watch brand new trailer for second season of ‘Gentleman Jack’

HBO has released a first teaser for the new season of Gentleman Jack.

Set in Halifax, West Yorkshire in 1832, the BBC’s hit period drama series is based on the real life diaries of Anne Lister.

Gentleman Jack premiered just under three years ago in April 2019.

The show was the most successful launch for a new BBC drama that year, and it was swiftly renewed another season.

Filming was unfortunately delayed by the coronavirus pandemic though, and production couldn’t resume until the end of 2020.

Suranne Jones (Vigil) and Sophie Rundle (Peaky Blinders) are finally back on our screens soon as Anne Lister and Ann Walker.

The pair will return this spring in eight new hour-long episodes.

Other returning cast members include Gemma Whelan (Game of Thrones) as Marian Lister, Gemma Jones (Last Tango in Halifax) as Aunt Anne Lister, and Timothy West (EastEnders) as Jeremy Lister.

The Larkins star Joanna Scanlan is new to the cast this season as Anne Lister’s outrageous former lover, Isabella ‘Tib’ Norcliffe.

The official synopsis the second season reads: “Yorkshire, 1834. All eyes are on Anne Lister and Ann Walker as they set up home together at Shibden Hall as wife and wife, determined to combine their estates and become a power couple.

“Anne Lister’s entrepreneurial spirit frightens the locals as much as her unconventional love life and, with Halifax on the brink of revolution, her refusal to keep a low profile becomes provocative and dangerous.”

HBO unveiled a 90-second preview this week, featuring our first look at footage from the new episodes, and now we can’t wait for Season 2 to begin!

Aunt Anne Lister, played by Gemma Jones, sums things up nicely: “You can never accuse her of not knowing how to show someone a good time.”

Season 2 will premiere next month on BBC One and BBC iPlayer in the UK, and in the US on HBO and HBO Max.

We don’t have an exact date, but we have been promised it’s arriving sometime in April.

The complete first season is available for UK viewers to stream on BBC iPlayer right now.

Gentleman Jack writer Sally Wainwright certainly isn’t taking a break anytime soon, however.

She currently has the third season of her gritty crime drama Happy Valley shooting in Yorkshire, then a sixth season of Last Tango in Halifax in development.

Wainwright is also writing a brand new 18th Century adventure series for Disney+ called The Ballad of Renegade Nell.

The eight-part drama follows “swashbuckling highwaywoman” Nell Jackson as she begins a life of robbery after being framed for murder.

Happy Valley is expected to return later this year, while The Ballad of Renegade Nell will arrive on Disney+ in 2023.

Gentleman Jack is available to watch on Amazon Prime Video.
