‘Grantchester’ star Robson Green reveals Season 10 plans – and beyond!

We’ve got some positive news for Grantchester fans!

With the long-awaited eighth season finally set to premiere in the UK next week, Robson Green has been chatting about his future on the show.

The 59-year-old actor has already shot a ninth season of ITV’s 1950s crime drama, which introduces newcomer Rishi Nair (New TricksWhitstable Pearl) as the village’s incoming vicar, Alphy Kotteram.

Tom Brittney will be departing Grantchester at the start of Season 9 after five years playing Reverend Will Davenport.

However, it’s a joy to reveal that Green has no plans to quit as Geordie, the character he’s played since the very first episode in 2014.

Discussing why he’s still happy playing Georgie after a decade, Green said: “As I’m in the last third of my life, I want to work with people I love working with and do projects that make me genuinely happy and push me creatively.

“But in the end, I just really want to have fun doing what I love. And Grantchester caters for those needs.”

“I’m an executive producer, and at the beginning we knew we had something special and that would float the audience’s boat, but we never realised how popular it would turn out to be and how well it would be received around the world,” he explained.

“But as long as [writer] Daisy [Coulam] is at the helm with [executive producer] Emma Kingsman-Lloyd, and as long as we have cinematographers and lighting designers at the top of their game, and we’re all still enjoying it, long may it continue,” Green added.

Bring on the tenth season of Grantchester, we say! And an eleventh, and a twelfth…

As an original cast member, Green also spoke of feeling “a responsibility” for guest actors to enjoy their time working on Grantchester.

“I want anybody who comes on the show to feel at home. I’ve spoken to so many people who’ve worked on the show who’ve said it’s lovely,” he commented.

“When people come on the show, I want to make sure that they have fun and enjoy the process. Of course they’ll work hard and know their lines and their story arc, but I also want them to have some fun.

“The industry can be incredibly stressful, but in the end, we’re making television and that’s a privileged position to be in; therefore, we should enjoy ourselves.”

Grantchester returns in the UK at 9pm on Thursday 11 January 2024 on ITV1, with all six new episodes streaming as a box set on ITVX too.

It’s nearly two years since the last season aired over here, with Season 8 having already debuted in the US last July.

Season 9 is expected to premiere later this year and, assuming ITV and PBS renew the long-running series, a tenth season will likely begin filming in the summer.

If you can’t get enough of Robson Green, his wonderful Weekend Escapes series is also back on telly this month!

Grantchester is available to watch on Amazon Prime Video.
