ITV reveals when ‘Grantchester’ returns with Season 8
Grantchester will be back on our screens this spring!
Based on the novels by James Runcie, ITV’s popular 1950s crime drama series has been running for nearly a decade.
An eighth season of Grantchester began filming last summer, with nearly all of our favourite characters returning in the six new episodes.
Exploring “faith, forgiveness, and redemption,” we’re told that the “explosive” new season “tests Will and Geordie to the limit.”
Tom Brittney, who plays Will in the show, previously commented: “I’m absolutely chuffed that we’re going ahead with another series of Grantchester and that I get to continue playing a character I adore so much.”
He added: “To be part of a show as well loved as this one, that is now in its eighth series, is an absolute honor.”
When does Season 8 start?
While we don’t have an official release date yet, ITV has revealed this week that Grantchester will return in the UK in March 2023.
It’s expected that the new season will premiere towards the end of the month on ITV1 – we’ll confirm this as soon it’s formally announced.
UPDATE: As of mid-March, ITV has now removed the new season of Grantchester from its March 2023 schedule. We’re not sure why, but they may have decided they already have rather a lot of crime dramas airing this month.
Hopefully a new slot will be confirmed soon!
In the US, Season 8 will launch on PBS as part of their Masterpiece Mystery season on Sunday nights later in the year.
The official synopsis for Season 8 reveals: “Will is the happiest he’s ever been, but his world will be rocked by a terrible accident. He’s always preached the word of a compassionate God – but how can he now, when his despair leads him on a dangerous downward spiral?
“Geordie has found a new contentment in his relationship with Cathy, but when they are both confronted with shocking announcements at work their happiness is threatened.
“As Mrs. C, Leonard, Jack and Daniel rally around, both Will and Geordie find themselves in unfamiliar, emotional waters and murder is always around the corner.
“Season 8 will range from Speedway to spies, exploring the lives of invisible women and the very visible problems caused by Leonard’s new vocation which may, once again, find him battling the law.”
Making his directorial debut this season is Grantchester star Al Weaver, who’s played Leonard on screen since 2014.
He’ll follow his co-star Tom Brittney in stepping behind the camera to direct an upcoming episode.
Also coming to ITV and PBS in 2023 is the final season of Endeavour.
The Inspector Morse prequel’s last ever episodes are set to begin in the UK very soon.
Grantchester is available to watch on Amazon Prime Video.
