‘Sanditon’ Season 3’s UK release date confirmed by ITV

ITV has finally revealed when UK viewers will get the final season of Sanditon!

Based on Jane Austen’s unfinished final novel, the hit period drama received a surprise two-season renewal in 2021 following its previous cancellation.

Sanditon returned in the US back in March on PBS Masterpiece, but fans in the UK have been left wondering for months when they’ll see Season 3.

We’re not quite sure why there’s been such a long wait for the six episodes to reach our shores.

The show’s second season premiered on BritBox in the UK within 24 hours of its US broadcast in 2022.

It’s likely that the delay is down to the continued muddle surrounding ITV’s plans for BritBox, which they now own outright.

Last December ITV launched its own free streaming service called ITVX, which is sort of linked with BritBox, but sort of not – if you upgrade to ITVX Premium you can view BritBox content, but if you’re a BritBox subscriber then you don’t get access to ITVX.

There were talks that ITV planned to just merge the two services together, but BritBox traditionally attracts an older audience than the young demographic ITVX is chasing.

Sanditon has much more of a BritBox vibe, in our opinion, but ITV has finally confirmed their third season launch details.

When’s the release date?

Season 3 lands in the UK exclusively on ITVX on Thursday 17 August.

All six episodes will be streaming from this premiere date.

“I’m thrilled that our third and final chapter has reached UK shores,” said star Rose Williams. “I’m excited for audiences to meet the brilliant new characters of Season 3, and to see how all Sanditon’s original inhabitants’ adventures conclude. It’s been a true gift to play Charlotte Heywood.”

The final run of Sanditon will then be broadcast on ITV1 later in the year, with episodes airing weekly.

Here’s the American trailer:

“The third season is by far the best,” praised reviews for Season 3 earlier this year. “They have given the Sanditon fandom the best of everything that will leave you teary-eyed, filled with thanks, and yet sorrowful that this beautiful series has come to an end.”

“Season 3 is the show at its soapiest, smartest best and it’s well worth the wait for long-time fans,” wrote another reviewer.

However, Masterpiece exec Susanne Simpson has confirmed that there won’t be a fourth season, despite being “sad to say goodbye to the series.”

Sanditon has been an incredibly special series for Masterpiece, and we know it has found its way into the hearts of countless fans,” she said.
