‘The Last Kingdom’ return date confirmed: When is Season 5 on Netflix?
Netflix has announced when The Last Kingdom is back!
Set in the late 9th century AD, when England is divided into seven separate kingdoms, the epic historical drama series is based on the Saxon Stories novels by Bernard Cornwell.
The Last Kingdom premiered in 2015 on BBC Two and BBC America, before moving to Netflix with its third season.
Ten brand new episodes wrapped shooting in Hungary, Budapest last summer.
The final season of The Last Kingdom will premiere on Netflix around the world on Wednesday 9th March.
Season 5 is based on the ninth and tenth books in Bernard Cornwell’s 13-part series; The Warriors of the Storm and The Flame Bearer.

Joining the cast are a number of new cast members, including Patrick Robinson (Sitting in Limbo) as Father Benedict, Sonya Cassidy (Humans) as Eadgifu, and Harry Gilby (Tolkien) as Aethelstan.
The cast released a fun video last April when production kicked off on the latest episodes:
The official synopsis reads: “Years have passed since the events of the last season, and King Edward is still forging ahead with his ambitions to unite the Saxon Kingdoms to fulfil his late father’s dream.
“Although a long-standing peace between Danes and Saxons now exists, that harmony is under threat. Not only by a new Danish invasion but a Saxon rebellion. Uhtred has been entrusted with protecting Edward’s illegitimate son, the future King of England, Aethelstan.”
While the upcoming fifth season will unfortunately be the show’s last, the cast recently began filming a Last Kingdom spin-off movie!
The film, titled Seven Kings Must Die, is expected to arrive on Netflix in 2023.
Alexander Dreymon, who’ll reprise his role as Uhtred in the movie, commented last year: “…the TLK team is getting together for another round. It’s going to be an epic end to a wonderful journey.”
The Last Kingdom is available on DVD on Amazon.
