The BBC has announced when the new season of Vienna Blood begins!
Set in 1900s Austria, the hit period crime drama first aired in 2019.
Vienna Blood returned for a second season last December, and a third season began filming in Vienna and Budapest earlier this year.
Matthew Beard (The Imitation Game) and Austrian actor Juergen Maurer are both reprising their roles as brilliant young English doctor Max Liebermann and Detective Inspector Oskar Rheinhardt.
When does it start?
Season 3 will premiere with ‘Deadly Communion’ at 9pm on Wednesday 14th December on BBC Two.
The second episode, ‘The God Of Shadows’, will follow on Wednesday 21st December, with the finale airing on Wednesday 28th December (TBC), titled ‘Death Is Now A Welcome Guest’.
All three episodes, as well as Season 1 and Season 2, will also be streaming on BBC iPlayer.
PBS is expected to show the new season in the US in early 2023, as part of their Masterpiece Mystery strand.
The BBC’s Head of Programme Acquisition, Sue Deeks commented: “We are truly delighted to welcome Vienna Blood back to BBC Two and iPlayer.
“What better way to spend a winter’s evening than to watch Max and Oskar as they attempt to solve three more ingenious murder mysteries in such a gloriously opulent setting.”
Executive producer Carlo Dusi added: “We cannot wait for viewers worldwide to discover Max Liebermann and Oskar Rheinhardt’s latest adventures through Matthew Beard and Juergen Maurer’s incredible performances, once again under Robert Dornhelm’s magical direction.
“The new season also features a range of wonderful supporting characters, both old and new, and we hope that our loyal Vienna Blood audience will love the new season as much as we all loved making it!”
Vienna Blood has proved to be a hit around the world, airing in over 100 territories.
The official synopsis for the show reads: “Vienna Blood is set in 1900s Vienna: a hotbed of philosophy, science and art, where a clash of cultures and ideas play out in the city’s grand cafes and opera houses.
“A brilliant young English doctor Max Liebermann (Matthew Beard) and Detective Inspector Oskar Rheinhardt (Juergen Maurer) investigate a series of unusual and disturbing murders. Max’s extraordinary skills of perception and psychology and Oskar’s forceful tenacity lead them to solve some of Vienna’s most mysterious and deadly cases.”
