Masterpiece Mystery preview: 3 new British crime dramas on PBS this fall

This year’s Masterpiece Mystery! season continues on PBS in the coming months.

The long-running Sunday night programming strand has already brought back several beloved crime series in 2022, including Endeavour, Guilt, Van der Valk, and Grantchester.

As the dark winter nights draw in, PBS will be introducing viewers to several brand new shows in October.

PBS has teased: “What do Kate Phillips, Lesley Manville, and Nicola Walker have in common? Their characters are all kicking crime, taking names, and cracking cases, and their shows all have their broadcast premiere the same night on Masterpiece Mystery!”

Watch a preview:

Beginning on Sunday 16th October on PBS, Masterpiece Mystery viewers can and enjoy Magpie Murders, from the writer of Foyle’s War, Nicola Walker’s Annika, and the return of Miss Scarlett and the Duke.

Yes, that’s a three hour back-to-back schedule of female-led British crime drama series every Sunday evening for six weeks!

Let’s take a closer look at the three shows:

Miss Scarlet and The Duke – Season 2

Kate Phillips and Stuart Martin will return as Victorian London’s most delicious detective duo-with-a-twist in a second season of Miss Scarlet and The Duke.

In the six high-octane new episodes, aspiring detective Eliza Scarlet competes for cases, trades jabs, and even partners with her longtime friend/rival, The Duke, as their relationship delightfully and maddeningly simmers on.

Season 2 premieres at 8/7c on Sunday 16th October.

Magpie Murders – Season 1

Magpie Murders is adapted from Anthony Horowitz’ bestselling novel by the Foyle’s War creator himself.

In a fresh, beguiling twist on the traditional murder mystery, with a solution that will both astonish and shock viewers, Magpie Murders centres on book editor Susan Ryeland (Mrs Harris Goes to Paris star Lesley Manville) and the unfinished mystery manuscript featuring her unpleasant, prima donna author’s longtime detective, Atticus Pünd.

When Susan attempts to attain the final chapters, she’s plunged into a shocking mystery case of her own—one which will change her life in ways she’d never expected. Artfully weaving between two interlocking time periods, the 1950s and the present day, Magpie Murders will delight even the most hard-boiled mystery fan.

Season 1 premieres at 9/8c on Sunday 16th October.

Annika – Season 1

Unforgotten star Nicola Walker trades in cold cases for maritime murders as DI Annika Strandhed in new police procedural series Annika.

Juggling enigmatic cases while trying to raise her rebellious teenage daughter, the droll and dry-witted skipper of Glasgow’s newly-formed Marine Homicide Unit drops literary references, breaks the fourth wall, and keeps viewers riveted through twists and turns galore.

If you can’t wait, you can watch all six episodes of Annika right now with PBS Passport.

Season 1 premieres at 10/9c on Sunday 16th October.

While this year’s seasons of Grantchester and Endeavour are now over, fans can look forward to more episodes of both shows in 2023!

The eighth season of Grantchester is filming in Cambridgeshire right now, and Endeavour will also be back for a ninth and final season.

It was also recently announced that Miss Scarlet and The Duke has been renewed for a third season.

Miss Scarlet and The Duke is available on DVD on Amazon.
