‘Vienna Blood’ will be back for Season 4 – with one big change!

We’ve finally got an update on the future of Vienna Blood.

A third season of the 1900s Austria-set period crime drama premiered in the UK last December, airing in the US earlier this year.

News on the show has been very thin on the ground since then, however, and we were beginning to wonder if the show had been quietly axed.

So we’re very happy to confirm that a fourth season of Vienna Blood began filming on location in Austria this summer!

Created by Sherlock writer Steve Thompson and based on Frank Tallis’s Liebermann novels, the series has been a hit for the BBC and PBS since it debuted in 2019.

The first three seasons were each comprised of three 90-minute mysteries, and this is where the producers will be shaking things up.

Introducing a big shift in the show’s storytelling, Season 4 will tell feature one single story told over three episodes.

The new season of Vienna Blood is described as “Max Liebermann and Oskar Rheinhardt’s most pressing and consequential case yet” by the studio.

We’ve got an official synopsis for the story here:

“It’s Vienna, 1909 and the double murder of an arms dealer in police custody and a senior public official has shaken Vienna to its core.

“Doctor Max Liebermann has only just returned from a tour of the U.S. when Inspector Rheinhardt asks for help in what could be the biggest case of their career.

“Oskar and Max discover a conspiracy that leads to the heart of government. Can the Freudian psychiatrist and the detective do enough to stop a seditious mole known as ‘Mephisto’ from bringing the Austro-Hungarian Empire to destruction?

“And will their lives ever be the same again?”

Matthew Beard (The Imitation Game) and Austrian actor Juergen Maurer will both be reprising their roles as brilliant young English doctor Max Liebermann and Detective Inspector Oskar Rheinhardt.

There’s no confirmation yet on which other returning cast members will be joining the crime-fighting duo though.

When’s the release date?

The fourth season of Vienna Blood looks set to premiere in the UK on BBC Two and streaming on BBC iPlayer in early 2024.

Over in the US, we expect PBS will air the new episodes later next year as part of their Masterpiece Mystery strand on Sunday nights.

“We couldn’t be happier to re-join forces with our friends at MR Film as we prepare to bring another dose of Vienna Blood to audiences worldwide,” said Carlo Dusi, Managing Director of Endor Productions.

“Together with writer Steve Thompson, director Umut Dag, Juergen and Matthew and the rest of our incredibly talented cast and crew, we have conceived a special new cocktail of crime and drama inspired, as always, by Frank Tallis’s wonderful novels, which we are confident will surprise and delight our viewers,” he added.

Vienna Blood is available to watch on the PBS Masterpiece channel with this free 7-day trial.
